ESRI ArcGIS Desktop: ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro

ArcGIS Desktop is the industry standard GIS software for users to create maps, perform spatial analysis, and manage data. The two primary desktop applications for ArcGIS users are ArcMap and ArcGISPro, which include the following extensions:

To install ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro software on your personal computer or Tufts owned computer, please email DataLab-support@elist.tufts.edu and we will provide further instructions. Please identify whether you are a student or faculty/staff in your email.

Tufts Technology Services holds a university-wide site license. It is installed in the Medford and Boston Data Labs, in addition to most Windows computer labs throughout campus. It is also available on the TTS Virtual Lab. ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro can be installed on any Tufts-owned or faculty personal computer. Additionally, we provide a 1-year free student version via a digital download key. The software may only be used for educational, research, and academic purposes, and not for commercial use or resale. The software only runs on a Windows OS. QGIS Software Information

QGISis a free and open-source desktop geographic information system (GIS) application that supports viewing, editing, and analysis of geospatial data. It can be installed on Windows OS, Mac OS and Linux platforms. QGIS integrates with other open-source GIS packages, including PostGIS, GRASS GIS, and MapServer.

GeoDa Software Information

GeoDa is a free and open source software tool that serves as an introduction to spatial data analysis. It is designed to facilitate new insights from data analysis by exploring and modeling spatial patterns. GeoDa runs on Windows, MacOSX and Linux (Ubuntu).

ENVI + IDL

ENVI is a remote sensing software used for processing and analyzing geospatial imagery. ENVI software combines spectral image processing and image analysis technology.

If you are interested in using ENVI’s remote sensing software for class or research, please email the DataLab-Support@elist.tufts.edu to request access to the software for your Windows or Mac computer. ENVI is also available on the TTS Virtual Lab.

ERDAS Imagine Software

ERDAS Imagineis software designed for processing, interpretation, and analysis of remotely sensed imagery.

ERDAS is installed in the Medford Data Lab. Tufts Technology Services owns five floating licenses of ERDAS Imagine. To install ENVI on your Tufts owned computer, please email DataLab-support@elist.tufts.edu and we can assist.

Google Earth Pro

Google Earth Pro is a free geospatial software application that displays a virtual globe, which offers the ability to analyze and capture geographical data.

Google Earth Pro is available to download for free on your personal Mac OS or Windows PC. Google Earth Pro is available on the Tufts Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) and is installed in the Medford and Boston Data Labs.

SketchUp Pro

Sketch Up Pro is a 3D modeling computer program for a wide range of drawing applications such as architectural design, interior design, civil and mechanical engineering, film, and video game design.

SketchUp Pro is installed in the Medford and Boston Data Labs. Tufts faculty can get SketchUp Pro installed on their Tufts-owned computer. Please contact IT@tufts.edu for help installing and accessing the software. We do not currently have a student version of the software but a lighter version of the software is available for free.

DNR GPS Software

DNRGPS is an open-source software built to transfer data between Garmin handheld GPS receivers and GIS software.

DNRGPS is available to download for free on your personal Windows PC. DNRGPS is available on the Tufts Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) and is installed in the Medford and Boston Data Labs.

Before you start this process, you need a ArcGIS Student Trial 1-year license code.

  • If you are a University of Connecticut (UConn) student, email Rich Mrozinski (mrozinski@uconn.edu) to request a 1-year student license code. All requests must come from UConn email address.
  • If you are not a UConn student, I recommend you contact your regional ESRI office (https://www.esri.com/en-us/contact).

You will need to create and/or use your ESRI Account to log in.

Arcmap For Mac

When prompted, enter the Authorization Number to access the download screen.

Next, select which version of ArcGIS Desktop you wish to download.

Next, click the download button to download the ArcGIS for Desktop software.

Install and Authorize

How do I install and authorize the software?

Follow these steps to installArcGIS 10.x for Desktop:

  1. If you do not currently have an earlier version of ArcGIS installed on your machine, proceed to step 2.If you have ArcGIS version 10.1 or later installed, you do not need to uninstall it before installing version 10.7.1; the ArcGIS setup package will detect and upgrade your ArcGIS for Desktop software. If you have ArcGIS version 10.0 or earlier installed, please uninstall it using the Uninstall Utility (download below) before installing ArcGIS 10.7.1.
  2. Download ArcGIS for Desktop, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, and the other files you would like to install. Please note that ArcGIS Data Interoperability, ArcGIS Data Reviewer, and ArcGIS Workflow Manager require ArcGIS for Desktop.
    • When downloading with the Esri Download Manager, you can select and download multiple products. However, only one product should be launched at a time when the downloads are complete.
    • Make sure you have write access to your download directory location as well as your ArcGIS installation directory location, and that no one is accessing it.
  3. Install the Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 below.
    • ArcMap requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7 or newer. Before running the installation program for ArcMap, ensure that your machine meets these prerequisites. The quick start guide provides an overview of installing and setting up ArcMap and links to detailed resources, including system requirements.
  4. Install and authorize ArcGIS for Desktop
    • Select a destination folder to extract the install files to. If you choose, you can automatically launch the setup after the files have been extracted
    • When prompted, select ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced Single Use.
    • When prompted, accept the default, I do not wish to authorize any extensions at this time. The extensions will be authorized automatically.
    • Enter your authorization number.

Follow these steps to authorizethe software:

If you installed the software but did not authorize it, follow these steps:

  1. From the Start button, run the ArcGIS Administrator. Select Desktop from the left-side menu.
  2. Select ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced (Single Use), and click Authorize Now.
  3. Verify the software you selected is listed at the top of the box. Click OK.
  4. Select I have installed my software and need to authorize it. Click Next.
  5. Select Authorize with Esri now using the Internet. Click Next. If you do not have an Internet connection on the computer you intend to install the software on, you can authorize the software using another computer that has Internet access or via e-mail.
  6. Enter your personal information (2 panels). Click Next on both.
  7. When prompted, accept the default, I do not wish to authorize any extensions at this time. The extensions will be authorized automatically.
  8. Enter your 12-character authorization number (EVAxxxxxxxxx), and click Next.
  9. After the authorization process is complete, click Finish. Authorization typically takes between 30 seconds and 2 minutes.
  10. Click OK to close the ArcGIS Administrator. The software is ready to use.
